Sophie Bella Carter
Carters’ works stem from continuous research into and fascination with the male gaze. Her graphic oil paintings depict an electric sensuality, and uncover a playfully erotic feminine fantasy.
Her practice explores how themes of deceit, cynicism and disobedience interact with the divine feminine. Having continuously focused her work on the female experience, her practice explores a certain kind of liberation that is gained from deceitful behaviour, cynicism, and becoming a disobedient woman. There is a certain privilege that accompanies bad behaviour. Women, who have continuously had to adjust, minimise, and professionalise their behaviour in order to be humanised, do not have permission to participate in self- indulgent self-destruction.
Carters’ paintings allow a temporary break in self-policing, and offer an immersive opportunity to be noncompliant.
