Lewisham Youth Theatre (LYT) is excited to announce a unique Theatre Design Associate role as part of our HATCH artist development programme. A six-month (part-time) residency, where you’ll have the opportunity to design the set and costumes for several LYT productions, whilst gaining support and mentoring throughout. You’ll also receive workshop facilitation training and have the chance to work as an assistant facilitator on our backstage programme.

This role is perfect for someone who is early in their career as a designer and wants to gain valuable experience in the youth arts sector. We especially encourage applications from people who share some of the lived experiences of LYT’s participants, including those from Global Majority backgrounds.

Key skills:

- Theatre Design – Experience in set and costume design, with a creative approach to translating ideas into practical designs.
- Creativity & Artistic Vision – Strong visual sense and the ability to innovate within budget and time constraints.
- Project Management – Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize deadlines, and stay organized throughout the design process.
- Collaboration & Communication – Effective team player with excellent communication skills, able to work closely with directors, designers, and young people.
- Workshop Facilitation – Interest in leading or assisting creative workshops, engaging and supporting young participants.
- Mentorship & Professional Development – Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and grow as part of a supportive team.
- Inclusivity & Cultural Awareness – Sensitivity to diverse backgrounds, creating designs that reflect and celebrate different stories.
- Technical Understanding – Basic knowledge of theatre production and design software (e.g., CAD, SketchUp).
