Portuguese Poetry Workshop: Translated Brazilian Poet Carla Diacov with Ann

28 Jan 20 — 28 Jan 20
Venue: Albany Deptford
Join us for another workshop translating the daring Brazilian poet and artist Carla Diacov with Portuguese translator Annie McDermott

Carla Diacov is a creative force, she trained in theatre but has built up a practice that works between poetry and art, producing poems, videos and drawings, often from her own menstrual blood, all from the confines of her home. Often her drawings and poems inform and inspire each other. This is our third public workshop looking at her work.
Annie McDermott works in Spanish and Portuguese translating fiction and poetry from. In 2013, she was the runner-up in the Harvill Secker Young Translators’ Prize. Her work has appeared in Granta , World Literature Today , Two Lines , Asymptote and Alba . Her co-translation of City of Ulysses by Teolinda Gersão (with Jethro Soutar) was published in 2017 by Dalkey Archive Press.
Carla Diacov is a Brazilian poet and artist born in São Bernardo do Campo in 1975. She makes paintings from menstrual blood and has written the books Ninguém Vai Poder Dizer Que Eu Não Disse ( No One Will Be Able to Say I Didn’t Say ), A Menstruação de Valter Hugo Mãe ( The Menstruation of Valter Hugo Mãe ) and A Munição Compro Depois ( I’ll Buy the Ammunition Later ).
This workshop is part of our upcoming Spring 2020 series of workshops. Our collaborative PTC sessions are a chance to experience first hand the intricacies of poetry translation. We works with a guest-translator and a poet-facilitator to go from a rough or literal translation to a poetic version in English. It is a great way to support international poets while getting surprising insists to different cultures and literary traditions.
There is no need to know the language being translated. Just drop in!
