Rhythm-a-ning Festival

Named after one of Thelonious Monk’s signature pieces, Rhythm-a-ning Festival is a two-day celebration of rhythmic performance, research, sound and movement at Trinity Laban.

The Festival starts with Lift The Bandstand #2 on Thurs 22 Oct, the second edition of this research symposium designed to facilitate discussion and demonstration of rhythmic practice in jazz, composition, and creative practice. Presentations from practitioners from within the research department as well as from further afield in London, the UK and abroad explore various aspects of rhythm in their work. The first day of presentations culminates in Chelsea Carmichael’s keynote/performance at Jazz at Cockpit in Deptford, sharing the bill with new work by Calum Gourlay and his Big Band.

On Fri 23 Oct, contemporary dance and jazz students collaborate in the studios at Laban Building, before an evening of Sounds from West Africa at Blackheath Halls.
